How Was The Book Made?

I created this book, first with pencil and paper. It’s always a joy to pull the ideas out of my brain this way. It never comes out perfect, but after many hours, familiar faces emerge and I know my characters have arrived.

The drawing part comes easy to me, but then I had write the story, and that always overwhelms me a bit. I made multiple drafts of the book, which ended very different than the final book, and I showed it to an agent for feedback. We worked through the story for many months, then took a break. Eventually, I picked it back up and had some new ideas. Every book is a little like a mystery. There are problem to solve, clue as to how to fix them, and you have to take the time to think through it all. I showed the books to some more friends (friends are the best!), and finally landed on a better draft.

Then I sketched out the book illustrations and made a “dummy book” by hand.

More fixing, more thinking, more reading the dummy book to myself and my friends. I probably worked on this book for 2 years before it was ready to illustrate. I used my ipad to draw and color the illustrations by hand. After they were ready, I handed them over to Melissa to layout into a book. She did a fabulous job. I ordered proofs and made corrections. Showed it to family and friends to catch every last typo (there were many), and then uploaded it to the interwebs.

Now it’s here!
